What to Expect

Having IVF for the first time can be daunting. That's why we've created a map to help you understand the IVF process and what costs are involved during your IVF4family journey.

Before your first appointment

You’re referred to IVF4family from an affiliated gynaecologist, where you sign a consent form to be contacted via email.

A nurse will email and request tests that will confirm if you’re eligible for treatment through IVF4family. The nurse will also arrange your first appointment.

Cost of tests is determined by your GP, gynaecologist and pathology providers.

First appointment

Your first appointment is a nurse interview. This appointment is to ensure all test results are received and to discuss how to adjust your lifestyle to optimise for conceiving a baby.

Appoitment bulk billed. $82 registration fee. 

Trial of embryo transfer

You’ll have a consultation with a fertility doctor where you’ll have a trial embryo transfer to ensure that your embryo can be transferred safely and easily to the uterus. You’ll also be given prescriptions that will assist you to produce more eggs. This appointment takes 30 minutes.

Procedure bulk billed. Procedure room fee of $309.

Visit a pharmacy to get your prescriptions filled. We will recommend a pharmacy, as many pharmacies don’t stock the medication.

Approximately $43 per prescription
(payable at the pharmacy)

Treatment cycle

To stimulate the growth of follicles on the ovaries, you’ll be taking injections daily. During this time the director of IVF4family or a nurse will perform vaginal scans to evaluate the response of the ovaries to the injections.

You’ll have an appointment with a nurse to discuss your cycle management.


You’ll attend day surgery for egg collection by a doctor.


If fertilisation and embryo culture are successful, you can return for the embryo transfer by doctor.

Anaesthetist fee and a hospital fee if you don’t have private health insurance.

Back to referring fertility specialist

If you’re pregnant, you’ll be referred back to your fertility specialist for a scan and will discuss obstetric care arrangements.

If your pregnancy is unsuccessful, you’ll be advised to return to your referring gynaecologist to review if other strategies should be put in place e.g different type of treatment cycle or surgical intervention before undertaking another treatment cycle with IVF4family.
